Former Pakistan cricket captain Salman Butt has commented on the recent appointment of Waqar Younis as Adviser for Cricket Affairs to Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi. Younis, who has had a celebrated career as both a cricketer and a coach, is set to play a crucial role in shaping the future of Pakistan cricket.
In an exclusive interview with Cricket Pakistan, Butt praised Waqar Younis' legendary status and his potential to bring positive changes to the team.
"Waqar bhai has been my coach and is a legendary cricketer, there is no doubt about that. I am not in a position to advise him; I wish him all the very best for this role," Butt stated.
However, Butt also emphasised the responsibilities that accompany such a significant position. He urged Younis to make bold and decisive choices, using his vision to effect meaningful changes within the organisation.
"I really hope this time around he makes some decisions. He should do what is necessary and get it done. I think he should make correct decisions; if he has the vision, implement it," he added.
Butt also called for fresh perspectives within Pakistan cricket, subtly criticising those who have held positions without contributing effectively.
"Don’t go after people who have been there for ages and have done nothing. I think it’s a huge opportunity for him, not an easy one certainly. If he is able to make correct decisions, something better might come up," Butt concluded.
Waqar Younis has been tasked with managing cricket-related matters, beginning with the upcoming series against Bangladesh.
As Adviser for Cricket Affairs, Younis will work closely with selectors and coaches to prepare for the Test series, which starts on August 21.
